We threw out all the general rules for our "Eccentrics and Dreamers" mix and just dug deep into our archives - we went a little heavy on Robyn and Roky, but it just feels...right. This mix has some noise, some humor, some creepiness, and some weirdness. RIP JAY

Well, a lot has been written already. Bar Clock, Postcard, and a lot of music lovers in general are saddened by the tragic loss of Jay Bennett at only 45 years of age. A couple of quick memories:

Bennett went on at length (some might say defensively) about how Wilco's popularity and size never felt right to him - and he proved this by hitting the road with Edward Burch in a beat up Toyota. And you could tell he relished jumping on stage and playing in a small room. When I moved to Chicago in 1998, I made a beeline to Lounge Axe and Schuba's and Martyrs' and all the other smaller clubs in town. And more often than not, you could figure it out which touring musician or act might end up having a mini-Wilco concert break out. Tim Easton? Check. Autumn Defense? Check. Tweedy playing solo at Liunge Axe or the Abbey Pub? Check. And there was Bennett in the middle of it all, with a shit-eating grin and his unkempt locks flowing about, loving every minute of it.

January 2000 - The Minus 5 / Wilco show as we said goodbye to the club - Bennett was in his element, bouncing from one instrument to the next, and inserting bits and pieces of Abbey Road as Jeff talked about the closing of the club.

December 2000 - Bennett gathers a bunch of friends - including Nora O'Connor, Andrew Bird, and Leroy Bach (who stole the show that night) and puts on a 5 hour show at Martyrs'. Bennett was the worst of the bunch - debuting many songs for the first time, sounding like a clone of Elvis Costello and really struggling in a very public forum - but that's what Jay did. He tinkered with songs in a way that went too far and ruined some great versions and he clearly drove a lot of people insane - fans and bandmates alike - but he also created a number of gems that will always bring a smile to my face.

Check out all the Bennettisms on display in this snippet from I Am Trying To Break Your Heart regarding the evolution of Poor Places - cigarette dangling, details about sound and noise and sonic landscapes and gear and microphones, and an enthusiasm that was always apparent.

'We were either going to get something great or lose our fucking minds..."

Finally, here's the July 24, 1999 set from Jay and Jeff (Jesus! Almost a decade ago) at the second annual Chicago Roots and Folks Festival - sponsored by the Old Town School of Music (where John Prine was discovered by Kris Kristofferson), although the school has since moved from Old Town and now resides in Finnegan's stomping grounds in Lincoln Village. A lovely acoustic set where Tweedy commented on the increasing rowdiness of the crowd (Steve Earle was the headliner that night) and Bennett, the mad professor as always, was bouncing around the stage even in this quiet setting. I was there right up front and loved every minute of it. Thanks to Chris "K-Fly" Campbell and his weeklong salute to Jay for posting this show.

In its earlier hard copy version (before they started pissing everyone off with their underrated / overrated columns in their new electronic-only version), Magnet magazine did some great themed issues (the shoegazing issue, the salute to Bomp! Records, etc.). One such issue occurred Feb / Mar 2004 where Magnet had a great 30-page spread / guide on some of music's most interesting personalities. The article was entitled Reality Bites: The Eccentrics and Dreamers Issue - and it featured Robyn Hitchcock on the cover donning a top hat and cape. For the past few years, I've wanted to tackle a few mixes using only the bands referenced in the piece. Corey on Teedy:
Vulture Whale's lead track on their latest album- what's not to love? It starts out with the maxell cassette tape beep, and then talks about the transformation of a gal who wears turtlencks and drives real slow who quickly starts smoking hoglegs and starts strippin'....ass shaking hilarity ensues.

Steve on Marlene:
A favorite song, and the upbeat attitude reminds me of spring.

Corey on Nancy Reagan's Head:
Roxy Music came to save the world and all I got was this lousy t-shirt.

Enrico on When Tiffany Cries:
A tune from the Cleveland-based power pop cult act The Mice - who had a big influence over Guided By Voices (you can picture Pollard belting this one out). Pretty soon after this music was released, The Mice disbanded and the lead singer Bill Fox made a go of it as a solo artist, but he vanished from the scene in the late 80s. In 2007, Fox was the subject of a Joe Hagan article in the June/July issue of The Believer, in which Hagan set out to answer to the question "Why Did Bill Fox Stop Playing Music?"

Enrico on Come On, Claire:
First brought to my attention by the mighty Jim Kotsonas and his legendary New Release Mondays Song of the Day epic posts on Postcard - this is a single from the fall of 2008. Uploaded for two reasons: 1) I love the happy-go-lucky mid 80s sound of the music as the lyrics get darker and darker, and 2) I didn't know if Lauree would be back from the UK in time and this mix screamed out for some Scottish pop (Lauree also came through on that end).

Graeme the Newlywed on Anna:
A heartbreaker from Sweden's finest.

Tualla on her selection of a song with a girl's name (we opted for the ladies of Bar Clock to upload songs with men's names in the titles, and they chose not to...)
So I primarily listen to guys singing. Guys singing about girls - so that's what you get. This is Calgary's Woodpigeon live on the BBC in February.

The Lyres - 80's garage rock revival, from Children of Nuggets.

Friends of mine from Wilmington, NC. I haven't seen them in years, but this song is so much fun live!

The Judge on Little Caney:
I don't know this for a fact, but I have always understood Little Caney to be a sweet little girl, not unlike one of my own, who is being accompanied through a family graveyard on a beautiful spring day (with the grass growing as tall as Caney....everybody knows that the grass grows tallest in spring...after that first spring cut, it stays cut through summer.) Even without the lyrics (that I love) I think that this song epitomizes the sound of spring to me...so I was pretty pleased that it had (what I presume to be) a girl's name in the title, too for purposes of this wonderful endeavor.

Lauree on choosing some Scottish pop (as if there was any doubt):
Ultimately the Scottish pop won out. Mainly because it's a better quality mp3 than the Swedish pop song I was going to include. Because I care!

Steve on Black Eyed Susie:
OK, so this one stretches the concept a bit, but it fits the qualifers and the title of the mix!

ALL THE LITTLE PRETTIES RAISED THEIR HANDS

As you'll soon see, the Bar Clock group is back with a vengeance. First up are several tunes for the late spring fever that's in the air - each song references a girl. The girl that got away? The girl that wouldn't go away? The little girl that breaks your heart? The head of a former first lady? One wonders. By the way, artwork for this one has turned out like a Belle and Sebastian cover reject, although the cover subject is Annika Norlin from Hello Saferide, who give us the fourth track on the mix.

BLIND PILOT'S LIVE SESSION WITH HEARYA.COM

As we put the finishing touches on the new mix (which should be ready by the end of the weekend), I thought we would share this great video with a recent new favorite of many of the folks at Bar Clock as well as Postcard: Blind Pilot. Courtesy of the folks running HearYa.com, here's what they had to say about the band's recent live session (4/3/09) at Shirk Music and Sound in downtown Chicago.

I had seen Blind Pilot twice already in April and experiencing them live only enhanced my love for their amazing debut, Three Rounds and A Sound. It’s easy to get caught up in Isreal Nebeker’s amazing lyrics, silky vocals and the wistful feeling of Blind Pilot’s music. Their sound is so effortless that it’s easy to lose sight of the spectacular work of rhythm section, led by Ryan Dombrowski. Watching them live in the studio really made me take notice and Ryan doesn’t miss a beat - nothing fancy but not a note missed. Add Luke on the stand up bass and they become the backbone of the band, allowing the band to strut their stuff.

BLUE RODEO TACKLES GEORGE

I went to Simon's at Foster and Clark in Chicago last night and saw The Western Elstons for the first time. I'd heard good things for the last couple months and finally bothered to get down the street to hear them. Turns out there a great little Country/Rockabilly band, complete with pedal steel, playing with no cover in one of my favorite bars. I highly recommend listening to them on MySpace http://www.myspace.com/thewesternelstons or getting out to see them if you happen to be in Chicago. Wednesday nights are interesting again!

From the double record compilation celebrating Bloodshot Records' first 5 years (and it's now 13 years and still going strong), a really lovely cover of one the few gems from Mick Jagger's solo career - Langford delivers his lines with a wink and a smile, and throw in the not-so-secret weapon of Kelly Hogan harmonizing with the two of them. I hear this and I feel like I'm camped out on Lincoln Ave at Delilah's on Wednesday night...

The False Husband
Album: Ballad of the Broken Seas (2006)
When the Duet theme was announced this one came immediately to mind. The stark contrast in their voices really works well together. Though I've been a longtime fan of Lanegan, I never really listened to Isobel Campbell before. The little bit of Belle and Sebastian I had heard was
just too twee for me, but this stuff works. It was one of my favorite albums from 2006.

Before Robert Plant, before O Brother, before most of the Grammy awards, Ms. Krauss was hanging with the much beloved (and loathed) band from Burlington, Vermont. The album where a lot of the studio weirdness was shaken off and restricted to the live setting. I cannot listen to this album and not think of wild college times.

ARCHIVE MIX: BAROMETER FALLING (2001)

Autumn has officially arrived, and as we put the finishing touched on the Duets mix, Bar Clock goes back to the archives and pulls out this gem from the founding father of the Postcard Mixer - Wayne Henning.

Sent out in November 2001, Wayne delivered a two-disc set of all-Canadian music (with "lots of East coast flavor" as noted by fellow Canadian and current Vancouver resident Rob Janes). Here are a few brief notes that Wayne wrote at the time:

- I had some difficulties normalizing the production values as a whole. Anything pre-1995 that has not been professionally remastered or anything taken from my vinyl vault (Fitzgerald) are the culprits.
(Note: the mix available here for download has been sound normalized)

- The segue from "Courage" to "November" is off by two full beats. The beep shoulda hit ya as soon as Courage went silent. Shite. Oh well.

And, just for some perspective - this mixer group was still in its infancy back then and the delivery (or delay) of the next mix was often subject to the realities in the world at that time. An actual post from Mr. Henning dated 13 Nov 2001:

Fucking anthrax! Let's delay the call for another week.

ARCHIVE MIX: NONVERBAL (2002)

This next archive mix takes us all the way back to January 2002. We had started the mixer group in August 2001 and the flood of mixes landing in our mailboxes during that period was very welcome given the news at hand those days. We were already up to Volume 11, and this was actually the "bonus" mix of instrumental music that Michael "The Vault" Herst - the one-time New West employee, had sent along, which featured a couple of unreleased songs (Slobberbone, Radiohead) at that point. I had so much fun putting the mix together. My wife is a little sick of listening to it, but she will learn to deal. Mogwai are quickly becoming an all time favorite for me...The Lil Capn Travis album (Lonesome and Losin') is one of the better alt.whatever releases I've heard in some time... And if I'd heard it before I made the disc, the instrumental song Peelin' Out In Zeus' Yard would have been track #1 on nonverbal. It's that cool.

I admit it, I'm a Sandinista! lover. It's reach definitely exceeds its grasp, but I love hearing them try to stretch. For purposes of this comp, what's not to love? Strummer name checks NY right out of the box. Thanks for putting it in the pole position - that's what I was hoping when I sent it.

These two (The Bethlehem Exit and Nobody's Chyldren) come courtesy of the Twilightzone blog where Gyro1966 has unlocked the vaults on his collection of rare 45s and turned them into series of comps under the title USA Garage Greats: 1965-1967. Over a hundred volumes and still going strong with a new one every day. If your into mid sixties Nuggets style rock, this is the mother lode. I really don't know anything about these bands. I don't think Nobody's Chyldren is the same band as Nobody's Children that did "Good Times" which Uncle Tupelo covered.

I picked "I'm Going Back to NYC" after running searches on my library for "New York", "NYC" and the such. Later, after I had submitted my two songs "Blues Concerning My Girl" came up in the shuffle and I thought "OMG this one has got to be on the comp."

Stompin' At The Savoy - Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong

I like what producer Norman Granz says in the *Ella And Louis Again* liner notes: "You know in the recording business we talk about the wonderful rehearsals or practice takes that are never recorded, and figuratively kick ourselves for not having the tape machines on when these gems occur. This time we were lucky -- we had the tapes going on a rehearsal of 'Stompin' At The Savoy' and, as you can tell from Louis' and Ella's lyrics, after the first chorus they were off and
running with their own lyrics, and we felt the result so spontaneously exciting that we decided to keep it.

Princess of Little Italy - Little Steven

As compiler, I invoked executive privilege (and the 80 min cut-off) to squeeze an extra song in. I saw Little Steven twice while living in Washington Heights during grad school, being the willing accomplice of my good friend Alex, hungrily hoping for the grail-like Bruce surprise guest spot that never did happen. Unlike our many other, possibly misguided, forays for Clarence, La Bamba and the Hubcaps, John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown band, and many others, the two times seeing the man previously-known as Miami Steve, and later Silvio Dante, did not disappoint. While "I am a Patriot" from his second album with a more world-view may be his finest post-Southside song, the first one, my vinyl long since gone in cross-country moves, is his NYC/NJ album. Yook this one off a good-sounding Boot from a concert in Germany - just pretend it's Tramp's in NYC. Bonus NYC bit - ran into him at coat check exiting Caroline's comedy club where we were seeing Pee Wee Herman (without, it should be noted, any expectation of Bruce showing up). As a New Yorker, I did not acknowledge him, but Alex had to go up and ask him about his plans for new recordings.

Scrapple From The Apple - Charlie Parker

52nd Street must've been a magical place for jazzbos in the late 1940s and '50s, with the likes of Billie Holiday, Coleman Hawkins, Art Tatum, Dizzy Gillespie, and Duke Ellington holding court. But to these ears, Bird was the best. Maybe not as disciplined as Duke, but the Parker imagination has no equal in the history of jazz. I think you can also make the argument that Bird's music perfectly captures the vibrant, frenetic, and chaotically hopeful nature at the heart of New York City perhaps better than any musician before or since.

The Luckiest Guy On The Lower East Side - The Magnetic Fields

This band was under my radar until the brilliant "69 Love Songs", where quantity had a quality all its own. I imagine Stephen Merritt hanging out in the bars of NYC, scribbling notes that became songs like this. I saw them in Pittsburgh, and was offended in that I was one of the handful of people other than his mother to buy the 3-disc set, yet on the back of a huge line when they played Carnegie Mellon. I ended up 6 people from the ticket window when it sold out, but the vendor let us in for free to sit on the stairs. A great Eeyore of a voice.

Funky Broadway - Wilson Pickett

Lots of folks took a stab at this Dyke and the Blazers soul chestnut in the mid-to-late 60s and early 70s (James Brown, the Temptations, the Supremes, Steve Cropper, Jimmy Smith, Jackie Wilson, etc.) - but Wilson absolutely kills here. Pickett's cry of "dirty, filthy Broadway" reminds me of Neil Young's version "On Broadway" twenty-two years later where Neil wails "gimme some crack !"

I just picked this up a couple of weeks ago and it has burrowed its way into my brain with ease. It's a cohesive record filled with a quiet melacholy. It sounded best at sunset. Although the press on this guy indicates lineage with the likes of Amos Lee and Ray Lamontagne, I hear sophisticated songs filled with atmosphere and nuance that are much more in line with David Sylvian and Paddy McAloon.

I admit it, I like Marcy Playground. I've got all three of their albums. I loved this album when it first came out, and it still gets the occasional play. "The Vampires of New York" falls into the category of songs with dark lyrics and a cheery melody, a type of song I find curiously engaging.

First saw and heard Dunnery at the WXPN Singer Songwriter Festival at Penn's Landing in the summer of 1995, where he stole the show from some of the better known performers that day. His work has always been a touch uneven for me, and I confess he fell off my radar screen, but this album still gets a lot of spins, and this song struck a chord as I was just out of college in my first apartment, my girlfriend (future wife) was studying abroad, most of my friends ended up in NYC or Boston and I was going it alone a few more miles south, and I was a couple blocks away from Pennsylvania hospital where the ambulance sirens would keep me awake well into the night.

Shattered - The Rolling Stones

An obvious choice isn't necessarily a bad choice. If it's good enough for the Stones to pick to end their (IMO) last great album, then it's a fitting capper to the NYC comp. A personal choice in that this is the first Stones vinyl I owned, literally and figuratively. When I started buying music with my own money (I turned 18 in '77), the Stones seemed, like the Beatles and Zep, less than relevant as they were always on the radio with their greatness behind them. Sure we all had Hot Rocks (on 8-track!), but who bought the latest Stones albums in the mid-70s? I grew up in Bronx / Yonkers and remember getting this album at Crazy Eddie's on Fordham road in the Bronx (before it was gutted during the looting during the black-out), walking from a root canal to my summer job at Honig's Parkway (a cut-rate, independently owned department store, working in Housewares - minimum wagers asking "Can I help you?") on Bainbridge and Webster Ave. This is the album that made the Stones relevant to me (for the first, and sadly, last time), and spoke to me and my friends, and this is my favorite track.

Even though the first theme mix will be released shortly, I felt this archive mix was appropriate with the holiday weekend right around the corner. This next archive mix was part of the fourth (and final) round of the original Postcard Mixer group. This mix comes to us courtesy of Eric "Happy Day" Murken. Here's Murk's original write-up:

Eric Murken's Theme for Lake and Cabin (2006)

I catered a friend's wedding about 10 years ago at a family friend's lake home about 6 hours north in Wisconsin. I drove food for 150 people up to the lake house in my beater Mazda 626 hatchback, filled to the ceiling in 90+ degree weather. Only lost one flat of strawberries on the way. My (future) wife and I stayed in the old cabin near the main house and prepped the food the day before everyone else arrived. While cooking, we found an old cassette player with a bunch of mix tapes - mostly old country, ranging from the 40's through the 70's. We listened to those tapes all weekend long, and a year later our newlywed friends assembled many of the tunes on a CD mix.That original "Cabin Tape" is burned into my brain, and has joined us for so many road trips - songs like "Abilene", "16 Tons", "King of the Road", etc. Lately I've been hankering for more of the same, but with new songs, so I assembled this one, "Theme for Lake and Cabin," revisiting many of the same artists. Good for back porches, long road trips, and campin'... Fave track: Roger Miller - Reincarnation (there's a solo Tweedy Lounge Ax show out there where he covers this one...great stuff)

Postcard Mixer started way back in 2001 and has produced a lot of quality mixes - and we're going to use this forum from time to time to share some of that music once again. In addition to several volumes of music, Postcard Mixer led to the formation of a splinter group (known as the PCFHRemix Group) where the most opinionated of the Postcard lot would weigh in on a track-by-track basis on their peers' mixes. This first mix in the archive series comes from that splinter group and is brought to you by the Judge. Included is the abridged version of the Judge's legendary liner notes which accompany his mixes.

Rock in a Weary Land - The Southern Sons
The Southern Sons have been together, in one form or another, since the 1930s. This version is from 1953's 'Deep South Gospel' and was released on the fantastic Alligator Records. I don't know much about them or pretend to sit around and listen to them all of the time, but I can't deny them. It does not get any more southern or any more gospel than these fellas.

What's Left behind - The Sadies
This was one of my favorite songs from one of my favorite albums of 2007 and I cannot wait for another Sadies album...whether it is the absurd spaghetti surf of their second-to-last release (an original soundtrack for the documentary Tales of the Rat Fink) or a more laid back affair such as New Seasons.

I Walk on Guilded Splinters - Cher
I really can't stand Cher, but this song has been crying out for inclusion on a mixer since I first heard it a few years ago...this slice comes from the 1969's very rare '3614 Jackson Highway.' Basically, Jerry Wexler & Co. sent Cher to Muscle Shoals with all The Swampers and Shoals crew and urged her to come out with a new sound and a new image. She did...Cher's version does not have the brooding that Dr. John's version has, but what it lacks in creepiness, it makes up for with funk...That's Patterson Hood's dad on bass.

Shake For Me - Howlin Wolf
At one time, this mixer was going to be a soundtrack for a stripper and this song was going to be on it (with songs by he Coasters, the Sonics, and others) and as the mixer changed, this song just kept getting left on...because it is so freaking great. I am always trying to throw Mississippi artists on my mixers because coming from a place that is associated with so much that is wrong, I have a chip on my shoulder and want to highlight the good...

Ever Lovin Man - The Dirtbombs
There is no other band that is the epitome of rock and roll that is as consistent as the Dirtbombs...I want to sit forever and look at Mick Collins's record collection. I had heard this album all of ONE TIME when I decided to put Ever Lovin Man on the mix. It was the first song to jump through the speakers and grab me by the throat. I credit (blame) the backing vocals for that.

Heart Attack - The Moaners
The pivotal track #6. I figure by this point, you have all jumped ship and started looking ahead to the random disc that came in your package. Anyhow...another Mississippian rears her head on the mixer...Melissa Swindle (formerly of Trailer Bride) and The Moaners put out a brilliant sex-soaked slice of greasy rock and roll a few years ago that gets better with every listen.

Katrina - Black Lips
To be fair, I am not all that familiar with them outside of their most recent album and their live show....which is incredible and not for the faint of heart. Katrina is the most fun song about the hurricane I think I have ever heard. I was going to contrast this with the Legendary K.O.'s 'George Bush Doesn't Like Black People' but it didn't flow well.

Crack Whore Blues - The Neckbones
It is hilarious now to imagine the likes of John Stirratt sharing the stage with these fellas, but it used to happen on a regular basis. (He also helped mix their second album.) This really is the seminal Oxford, MS band. They toured with RL Burnside, opened for Fugazi, lived with Blue Mountain, and put the place on the musical map...and I bet most of them still live and work in and out of music in and around Oxford. ND credit: One of the Neckbones punched Matt from Fat Possum out on the night that they released this record...their relationship with Fat Possum became strained thereafter.

Expressway to Your Heart - The A-Sides
Terrible transition from sweaty, meaty, big and bouncy rock to pussified indie rock-strained Philly soul....I'd never listened to Philly's A-Sides until I heard this cover of the Soul Survivors classic...I usually hate it when a soul song is stripped and re-created for another audience, but I hold no ill will against these kids...they took the song and made it their own and didn't embarrass themselves.

Welfare Bread - King Khan & His Shrines
Along with acts like the Neckbones, the Dirtbombs, the Black Lips, and others found on this mix, the music is new but shares so much with the sounds that preceded it that I don't hate it...what I guess I am saying is that the more new music I hear, the more I like old music...or new music that sounds like it could have been created 30 or 40 years ago. Welfare Bread comes from the 2007 album 'What Is!' which was actually put out by King Khan & His Shrines (I guess BBQ was busy)...

Ghost - Apollo Sunshine
I have probably listened to this album more than any album in the past year...I'm pretty certain that AS is not for everyone (K-Fly seems smitten) but the self-titled 2005 album has paid off more than almost any album I think of that I have heard in the past couple years.

Jealous Guy - Donny Hathaway
Donny Hathaway is pretty much known for two things: The Ghetto and Roberta Flack (I guess he is also known for getting a shout out in Winehouse's Rehab as well...but I digress). Not taking anything away from those two things, I absolutely love his take on the Lennon classic...It is especially cool to remember that when Hathaway recorded this song, it had only been out for about a year. I have no idea what Lennon thought about it, but choose to believe that he loved it as much as I do.

Let Me Roll It - Brendan Benson and the Well Fed Boys
Stoner Pop? I've used this song on a mixer before, but after a billion mixers, it is getting hard to be completely original each time...it is one of my favorite Macca songs ever...so gritty and non-Paul...and Benson does not do a bad job of bring the fuzzy with a straight-up copy of the song. This is one of those songs that I love listening too very loud, very late at night on very old speakers...

Cherry Chapstick - Li'l Cap'n Travis
Cap'n Travis isn't for everyone...the vocals are what they are...to these ears, they are endearing...and live, these guys cannot be touched. I don't know why I love this song so much...I wanted to throw a Cap'n Travis song somewhere on the mixer, and figured closing with this song would be good as anything...but only because I couldn't find a place for Sugar Buzz....Cherry Chapstick and Boone's Farm wine...making out in the summertime....I love it!

The recent NYC comp thread on Postcard made some of the 3 am folks realize that there's a tremendous amount of quality tunes about NY, NY. Here is some of the basic info:

1. When the Lights Go Out - The Black Keys
from the album "Rubber Factory" (2004)
I originally planned to put this on my mix cd back in 2006. But when I had to start cutting out songs to make it fit on one cd, this was last song that got cut, so I decided to start the next one out with it.

2. All Around the Houses - Holly Golightly
From the album "Truly She Is None Other" (2003)
I first heard Holly Golightly on the last song of The White Stripes Elephant album, but it was this album, and especially this song that made me fall in love with her. I immediately start boppin anytime this song comes on. It's infectious.

3. Skinned - Blind Melon
from the album "Soup" (1995)
I used to listen to these guys back in the day. This song seemed to fit in with the mood I was trying to create somehow.

4. Sorry - The Easybeats
from the compilation "Nuggets II: Original Artyfacts from the British Empire and Beyond, 1964-1969 (2001)
I was familiar with "Friday on My Mind", but it wasn't until I started digging into the Nuggets collections that I realized there was so much more to this band.

8. Lil' Piece of Leather - Demolition Doll Rods

9. Garden of Eden - New Riders of the Purple Sage
from the album N.R.P.S (1971)
Perhaps its too hippy for some of you, (Jerry Garcia is playing pedal steel on this album) but this is the definitive New Riders, and not that Panama Red shit that came later. One of the great country rock albums of the early 70's

10. Making Time - The Creation

It was after listening to Son Volt's live version of this song and of the Del-Vetts "Last Time Around" that I started seriously seeking out Nuggets style garage rock. I'm still on that search and its probably the style of music that I currently listen to the most.

12. Same Thing Twice - John Wesley Harding
from the album "Here Comes the Groom" (1990)
Back in 1990 I thought John Wesley Harding was going to be Gen X's Bob Dylan. It didn't quite work out that way, but "Here Comes the Groom is still a great album.

13. Last Time Around - The Del-Vetts

14. Downed - Cheap Trick

Again, Son Volt's cover of this song is what lead me check this out.

15. Half Past You - Love Battery
from the album "Far Gone" (1993)
I was shopping for used cds at Used Kids in Columbus when this band was playing on the stereo. I walked up to the counter and asked "Who is this?" I now have 3 of their cds. Love Battery was a Seattle grunge band from the SubPop stable that didn't make it big like Nirvana and Pearl Jam

16. Loaded - Primal Scream
from the album "Screamadelica" (1990)
I'm kind of hit and miss with Primal Scream. Love this one though.

17. Vertebrats - Left in the Dark
from the album "1000 Day Dream" (1979)
The original version of a song I heard first done by Uncle Tupelo. I picked this cd up for $3 at Used Kids. A sweet deal.

18. Slide Machine - 13th Floor Elevators
from the album "Easter Everywhere" (1967)
On another trip to Used Kids Records in Columbus they were playing 13th Floor Elevators. I knew it was the Elevators and so I didn't have to ask this time. I'd heard Psychedelic Sounds before but merely thought it was ok. Listening to them in the store that day though they sounded so much more raw and powerful. I was converted. Within a month I had all 3 of their albums.

19. Memphis - Marcy Playground
from the "Sex and Candy" cd single b side (1998)
OK, so Marcy Playground is a bit of a guilty pleasure with me, but this one seems pretty Postcard friendly.

20. Death of a Clown - Dave Davies
from the compilation "Daytrippers"
I found this on a compilation at the library. It sounds virtually identical to the Kinks version on "Something Else" but the track timing is about ten seconds shorter.

21. Ant Farm - Eels
from the album "Electro-Shock Blues" (1998)
Electro-Shock was my first Eels album, and its still my favorite. Ant Farm is kind of a light song on a pretty dark album. A day after song for having survived the apocalypse.

22. Yr Own World - The Blue Aeroplanes
from the album "Beatsongs" (1990)
a piece of nostalgia for me. The early 90's was a time of redicovering radio and new music after being stuck in the classic rock thing for most of the 80s.

Since most of us are lazy and not terribly organized, we've experienced some bumps in getting things moving again...

That was until Jeff "Postmeridiannew" Wilson got fired up!

Wilson has provided the following mix to get this thing going. I pass it off to him for the rest of the introduction:

"OK, since we're taking our good old time getting started, I thought I'd start things off by throwing a mix out there. This is the mix I was preparing as a follow up to our mixer group back in 2006. Had we done another round in 2007, this would been the disc that I sent out. It's been sitting on my hard drive for a year now just waiting to go out.

Welcome to the new Postcard Mixer blog. The Postcard Mixer was founded by the visionary Wayne Henning back in 2001. The goal was and remains simple - sharing music with friends and creating some kick ass mixes. Things quickly got out of hand as we outdid each other with multiple bonus CDs of music mixers. Most folks have dropped by the wayside, but a core group carries on.

Every few weeks, a small group of Postcarders (postcardfromhell.com) will be offering up a themed mix. Mixes, track listings, artwork, and musings will be disseminated through the blog from now on. Enjoy...
