CALAMITY THEME - SAINTS DON'T BOTHER

Well, it took a little longer than expected, but the Postcard Mixer group is back in action. After some vacation and some real world responsibilities, Postcard Mixer is pleased to present our second themed mix. Thanks to Coop for the theme and sequencing. Below is the track listing with selected commentary from the contributors as well as some additional artwork:

Here's Your Future - The Thermals

George Bush Deos't Care About Black People - The Legendary K.O.
Sean's comment: "Hurricane Katrina hit Mississippi…Nobody but God co
uld have prevented that…New Orleans was destroyed by faulty levees and government inefficiency from the top down…This song could be about Bush, Landrieu, Nagin…there was (and is) plenty of blame to be shared, but the buck has to stop with someone."

How Can A Poor Man Stand Such Times And Live? - Bruce Springsteen

The News About William - Calexico
Jay's comment: "Here’s something of a preview of “Carried to Dust.” This song began as a little two-piece instrumental on Toolbox, then sprouted lyrics when performed live with the full band. Features some very tasteful and sensitive drum work from John, and lands here due to another overt Katrina association."

Little Tornado - Aimee Mann

Wreck On The Highway - Nitty Gritty Dirt Band with Roy Acuff
Enrico's comment: The 30th anniversary edition of "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" has some great commentary from the band members on their interactions with Acuff, and his descriptions of them as "a bunch of long-haired West Coast boys." But, true to his word, Roy stood by his stance that he would play real country music with anyone, anywhere, at any time."

Earthquake - 13th Floor Elevators

California Earthquake - The Grateful Dead
Jay's comment: "The Loma Prieta quake hit the Bay Area on October 17, 1989. On October 23, 1989, I was in Charlotte Coliseum to see the Dead, and they opened with this Rodney Crowell tune."

Deportee (Plane Wreck at Los Gatos) - The Byrds

Xenia In My Mind - Bigfoot

You Been Gone - Chuck Prophet
Joe's comment: "What could be more calamitous than having to move back with the parents."

Landslide - Popguns
Enrico's comment: "So you're the former drummer of a beloved cult band in Britain in the mid 80s? What do you do for an encore? You form another beloved cult band in the late 80s. The result? Shaun Carman leaves the hyperkinetic Wedding Present and hooks up with Wendy Morgan to form this criminally underrated jangle pop band. This is their first single that was released just prior to their full length debut."

Blizzard of '77 - Nada Surf
Wayne's comment: "Like most pretentious hipsters exposed to Nada Surf's chart
topping single Popular, I didn't bother to dig any deeper. Twelve years later I'm discovering what this band has been doing incredibly well for over a decade now - making great power pop records. Blizzard of '77 is the lead track from their 2002 release Let Go."

Disaster - Besnard Lakes
Corey's comment: "Perhaps my favorite song of 2007."

Breakast In Hell - Slaid Cleves and the Men of Steel

Sin City - The Flying Burrito Brothers

Walk Away - Tom Waits
Corey's comment: "When I think of songs of natural or man-made disasters, personal heartaches, and/or magnificent loss, I think of Tom Waits...from the Dead Man Walking soundtrack."

Talkin' Bear Mountain Picnic Massacre Blues - Bob Dylan
Jay's comment: "Bring the whole kids. Yippee."

Great job kids. danke.

Some other possibilities...

Busta Rhymes - When Disaster Strikes (from the album "When Disaster Strikes...)

or

The Long Winters - The Commander Thinks Aloud (from the album "Ultimatum"), the song is about the Challenger disaster, and is gorgeous.
